Best Time to do Upper Mustang Overland Tour

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour is famously undertaken during the dry and stable seasons. As we have to tour most of the terrain in our private Jeep, the desert landscapes must be accessible, and visibility should be optimal for the enhanced experience. Upper Mustang lies under the shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, which makes this region already drier than the other parts of Nepal. The ideal period to visit the Upper Mustang would be the Spring and Autumn seasons.

  • Spring (March to May): Autumn promotes the mild daytime temperatures, with the nights being colder. The landscape blooms under the clear skies. We may counter light rain and scattered clouds in the season, but this season will promote an excellent experience with fewer crowds and vibrant cultural frames that contrast with the arid terrain.
  • Autumn (September to November): This is the best possible season to undertake any trek or tour in Nepal, and rightly so in Upper Mustang. The weather is picture-perfect with 24/7 clear views of the landscape and the towering peaks nearby. Post-monsoon offers stunning views, and festivals like Dashain and Tihar add cultural immersion and a vibrant environment.

Difficulty of the Upper Mustang Overland Tour

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour is rated as a moderate trek that is suitable for those with moderate fitness. There is no such requirement for prior high-altitude trekking experience, as everyone can undertake this tour successfully. There are vehicle accessible trails that will follow the ancient salt trading routes. Major factors that influence and add difficulty to this tour are:

  • Altitude: We will reach up to 4000m of altitude above Lo Manthang. We will ascend to Marang La Pass at 4230m. The altitude can pose the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Terrain: The terrain is relatively arid and dusty, with occasional steep sections on the rocky sections. However, technical climbing is not required. Despite that, the longer, steep sections on rocky and windy trails can add a formidable level of challenge.
  • Duration and Fitness: Trekker should expect 5-6 hours of daily driving and walking at the higher elevation above 3000m. The trail is less strenuous than other challenging treks like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit, but trekkers must prepare with light training and consult a doctor if they have lung-related conditions.

For this Trek, a guide is mandatory as we will enter the restricted area. The trek is manageable for people aged 12+. We do not recommend this trek for elderly people with health conditions or pregnant women.

Managing Altitude Challenges

  • Difficulty: The Upper Mustang Overland Tour reaches elevations up to 4000m, which may increase the risks of altitude-related sickness and pose the risks of sudden injuries as well. To manage the problems and reduce the risks, a trekker has to follow a few strategies as we have suggested below:
  • Strategies:
    • Acclimatization: Following the itinerary as it is and following the guides’ suggestions will help reduce the risks. Spending extra hours in Kagbeni and Chele will help in adapting.
    • Hydration: A trekker must drink 3-4 liters of water every day to combat dehydration. Hydrating enough will let oxygen levels flow during high-altitude treks. Use water purification or boiled water to prevent contamination.
    • Monitor Symptoms: Follow the altitude-related signs every day. The preliminary signs will be headache, nausea, and dizziness. Inform the guides immediately if you notice any symptoms. You can also use Diamox after consulting with the doctor.

Cultural Immersion on the Upper Mustang Overland Tour

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour offers secluded cultural encounters in the lost and forbidden world of Nepal. This region was only opened for the public in 1992 AD, and it still retains a vibrant and nomadic Tibetan-Buddhist heritage influenced by the Tibetan culture. This restricted region feels like we stepped into a different world with the ancient lifestyles, cultures, and artifacts providing the authentic lifestyles far and untouched from modernity.

The major highlights include the Tibetan-influenced villages and Traditions due to the proximity and relations with the Tibetan region. The monasteries and gompas offer a spiritual experience that makes us immerse ourselves in the soothing environment. The longest Mani wall, sky caves, and the unique Tiji Festival, which is performed by dancing wearing masks and murals. The Upper Mustang is a living museum and a peak of ancient heritage for people who want to explore the culture. This region emphasized a respectful cultural immersion with deep historical insights.

Food and Accommodation on the Upper Mustang Overland Tour

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour features a diverse and comfortable lodge and teahouse-style lodging with hearty and diverse meals suited to the high-altitude trekking that blends Nepali, Tibetan, and western food options. The options will be limited in the remote region, but with time being they are improving. Full board packages like Alpine Vista Treks will secure the best of services and hassle-free accommodations even in the peak seasons.

  • Accommodation: Our accommodations will primarily be in the teahouses or guesthouses throughout the tour. We will spend our nights in comfortable 3-star facilities in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but the amenities will reduce as we enter the remote regions. The amenities will include twin-shared rooms, beds, blankets, and hot showers in some teahouses. In Jomsom, the options are diverse with private rooms and attached bathrooms. Be sure that the accommodations will be comfortable. Camping is also an alternative, but teahouses dominate the cultural vibes and soaking environment. Booking in advance during the peak seasons is a wise option.
  • Food: The food provided throughout the Upper Mustang Overland Tour will be nutritious and filling. The major staples served are dal bhat with unlimited refills, momos, thukpa, pasta, and soup-filled dishes. The food options will mainly be vegetarian in the high altitudes. You will get a variety of options in Pokhara and Kathmandu restaurants. Dinners in the teahouses will be communal with warm food provided via stoves. In the remote areas, variety will decrease, but the portions will be enough to fuel the required energy.
