Spring Season (March to May)

Spring is one of the most favorite and rewarding times to undertake the Gokyo Ri with EBC via Cho La Pass Trek. The weather this season is generally clear and consistent, ideal for trekking. The temperatures are balanced, and the trails will be drier with the melting ice. Rhododendron forests will cover the lower altitudes with stunning mountain views almost every day. The trail with the blooming wildflowers will become picturesque and fragrant. Spiring is also a busy season as the Everest and other mountains are open for the expeditions. The combination of vibrant nature, bustle, and colour makes this season a formidable one.

Autumn Season (September to November)

Autumn is widely regarded as Nepal’s most dependable and favored season for trekking. The trails to the Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp via Cho La pass will become a panoramic fiesta. We will get the most fantastic and crystal clear panoramas of different peaks from many perspectives. Temperatures this season are moderate and stable than in other seasons with equal days and nights. Festivals like Dashain and Tihar bring lively energy and vibrancy to Khumbu settlements. The glaciers and lakes become cascading and turquoise against the blue sky. Overall, autumn delivers the best variety and time for safety and rewards.

Difficulty of the Gokyo Ri with EBC via Cho La Pass Trek

This trek is considered among the challenging and achievable for trekkers with good fitness levels. The technical climbing is not required for this trek, but proper balance is mandatory. Alpine Vista Treks will do everything on our hands to protect you from the mishaps.

We will spend several days in the altitudes higher than 4500m, which will require us to acclimatize and careful pacing.

The Cho La Pass crossing involves a steep approach and icy sections on the rocks. This will become the toughest day of the trek.

We have to walk for more than 7-8 hours per day, especially when we cross the glaciers and passes.

The weather cannot be predicted easily. Sudden snowfall, cold winds, and flight delays at Lukla will add physical and mental strain to our journey.

Altitude Sickness Risks & Remedies during Gokyo Ri with EBC via Cho La Pass Trek

Altitude sickness is a serious concern for the high-altitude treks like Gokyo Lakes with Everest Base Camp via Cho La Pass. This trek combines challenging steep ascents, high altitudes, glacier crossings, and extended walking hours. As we pass above the altitude of 3500m, symptoms like headache, nausea, or dizziness can worsen. That’s why we have made a strategic acclimatization and ascending process to adapt to the thinning air.

We will take scheduled acclimatization days and ascend gradually to adapt to the thinning air.

We have to recognize the symptoms like nausea, headache, hard breathing, etc, and descend or rest immediately for the safest response.

We have to stay hydrated with 3-4 litres of water every day and should drink fluids every day.

Carrying Diamox or recommended medicines will help in adaptation, but that should only be done with the doctor’s prescription.

Food on the Trek

We will be served warm and freshly prepared food during the trek. The food options may not be wide, but they will be full of nutrient-rich options throughout well-selected teahouses. Alpine Vista Treks will make sure you get the best and hygienic food that supports energy at higher altitudes. The food will be of traditional Nepali staples like dal bhat in Tibetan style and local seasoning. The other meal options will be noodles, pancakes, spaghetti, and a few teahouses will have momo and pizza too. Vegetarian options are widely available, and we recommend having vegetarian or vegan options to balance the freshness of the food. Pre information about any dietary restrictions is kindly advised.

Accommodation on the Trek

We will be staying in the clean and comfortable mountain lodges that are run and managed by the local people throughout the trek. Alpine Vista Treks will make sure each of the overnight stays will be pre-arranged, so you will have access to a comfortable stay even during the peak season. Teahouses along the trail provide cozy blankets, twin beds, pillows, and shared dining halls warmed by stoves.

Few teahouses in the lower and accessible region will provide electric heaters and hot showers as well. Almost every teahouse in Lukla, Namche Bazaar, and Gokyo Village will provide the facility of internet access. We will get the best possible amenity on the route that offers us a restful and comfortable night.

Welcome to Nepal! You will arrive at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, where our representative will be waiting for you and will escort you to the hotel. After resting a bit and getting refreshed, we will take you on a little stroll around Thamel and other markets around Kathmandu for a bustling evening. We will have a welcome dinner and prepare for the last-minute essentials. We will have a thrilling week or so with the trek officially starting tomorrow.

The adventure to the Khumbu trail begins now. We will start off with a thrilling flight to Lukla, which is one of the most iconic airports in Nepal. We will have the first glimpse of the Himalayas while we are on the flight from an aerial point of view. After landing in Lukla, we will meet our crew and start the descent trek after a brief breakfast break. We will cross the iconic pine forests and cross the suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi river. This easy-paced walk will set the tone for our iconic adventure ahead.

The hike today will take us deeper into Sagarmatha National Park as we will have multiple river crossings. We will pass through the Monjo Village, where our permits are checked. After a final steep uphill section, the vibrant amphitheater of Namche Bazaar will welcome us with the prayer flags and a touch of culture and modernity. This is the major trekker’s hub of the Khumbu region. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.
Day 4

Acclimatization Day in Namche (3,440m)

We will have an active acclimatization day in Namche and the surrounding area. We shall arrive at the Everest View Hotel, where we’ll take in the stunning panorama of peaks like Everest and Ama Dablam. We will return to Namche for lunch, where we will have cultural immersion at its best. We will visit the local market and Sherpa museum for immersive activities and return to our teahouse for a restful evening.

Namche Bazaar to Dole (4,200m) – 5–6 hrs

We will leave the busy EBC route and catch the off-beat route to the Gokyo Valley trail. Rhododendron and juniper forests will frame our trail as we climb higher. As we reach the altitude, pine forests become bare and alpine meadows, and we will start getting glimpses of the panoramic situation of the Khumbu River. The trail will ascend to the peaceful Himalayan sections as we reach Dole. Overnight in Dole.

Dole to Machhermo (4,470m) – 4–5 hrs

We will continue the climb along the ridge with the rewarding and expansive views of Cho Oyu and the neighbouring panorama. While we pass the settlements like Lhabarma and Luza, we would see the grassy slopes with a few yaks grazing in front of us. This will be a short hike of almost 5 hours till we reach Machhermo. Machhermo is a windy and scenic village. This day will aid in our acclimatization before reaching the trails of Gokyo Valley and allow our bodies to prepare for the higher altitudes.

While we follow the upstream of the Dudh Koshi River, we will pass through the rocky trails of the first and second Gokyo lakes. The turquoise waters offer us a surreal view to make the experience one of the most beautiful and surreal alpine journeys. We reach the Gokyo village that is settled beside the third lake. We will rest in a teahouse above the lake. After a late lunch, we will explore the lakes and relax for a restful evening with a cup of hot tea.

Acclimatization in Gokyo – Hike Gokyo Ri (5,360m) – 3–4 hrs

We will rise early and hike uphill to the Gokyo Ri before sunrise. Gokyo Ri provides one of the best vantages of sunrise views over the four 8000m peaks, including Everest. This viewpoint is often regarded as a rival of Kala Patthar, and we will have the best views, with a 360-degree panorama. We will return to Gokyo Village for a restful afternoon and explore the locality.

Gokyo to Dragnag/Thagnak (4,700m) – 3–4 hrs

Today, we will have a shorter but strategic trek as we move closer to the Cho La Pass. We will walk across the moraines of Ngozumpa Glacier in a rocky and wild landscape. We will experience the peak of the Himalayan landscapes today. We will reach Dragnag, commonly known as Thagnak, which is a small settlement tucked below the rocky cliffs. We will rest early and prepare for a pass cross tomorrow.

Cross Cho La Pass (5,420m) – Trek to Dzongla (4,830m) – 7–8 hrs

This is a challenging and thrilling day for us in a high-altitude landscape. We will start before sunrise with the headlamps on our heads. We ascend the rocky trail with the icy sections to reach the grandeur of Cho La Pass. The top offers the striking views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. The descent to Dzongla will be even more dramatic as we pass a strenuous and longer day.

Dzongla to Lobuche (4,910m) – 3–4 hrs

This will be a relatively shorter and gentler trek for us to adjust to the strenuous and tiring day yesterday. We will now join the regular Everest Base Camp trail while enjoying the views towards Nuptse and Everest. The trail will contour around the ridges and glacial streams until we reach Lobuche. The altitude will be higher, but it will also be manageable. We will have a restful night before a big adventure tomorrow.
Day 12

Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,180m) – Visit EBC (5,364m) – 5–6 hrs

This is a big day for us. We will start early across the glacial terrain to Gorak Shep. Take a brief rest for lunch and make the most iconic hike to Everest Base Camp alongside the Khumbu glacier to touch the legendary destination. Although the Everest’s summit isn't seen from the base camp, the experience will be triumphant and unforgettable. Return to Gorak Shep and hydrate ourselves for the Kala Patthar hike tomorrow.

We will start our pre-dawn to reach Kala Patthar for a spectacular view over Mt. Everest and Lhotse with surrounding peaks. Kala Patthar is often rated as the best viewpoint for the view. We will soak in the pristine atmosphere of the sunrise view of the Everest and have some picturesque moments. We will take a long route towards Dingboche after lunch in Gorak Shep as we begin our return.

Although we are descending, this rest day is organized to recuperate the tired legs and adjust the body to feel the higher oxygen levels. This rest day will support an easier transition back to the lower trails.

The trail will lead further down to Tengboche through the alpine shrubs and small chortens towards Pangboche. After crossing the Imja River, we’ll make a brief climb to reach Tengboche. Tengboche is an iconic village with the iconic Tengboche Monastery, which is often regarded as the Sherpas’ spiritual capital. We will witness the evening prayers if the time aligns. We will rest comfortably with better amenities in the teahouse of Tengboche.

Today, we will walk downwards back towards the forests of pine and rhododendrons. We will cross the Dudh Koshi river again and climb gradually towards the town of Namche Bazaar by mid-afternoon. This will be our final trekking day as we descend to Lukla through Monjo and Phakding. We will cross long, fluttering suspension bridges and retrace the route along the river. We will board an ever-adventurous Lukla flight back to Kathmandu with the brief sceneries of the Himalayas for the last time. Once we land in Kathmandu, we will check into the hotel and enjoy rest, coffee shops, and souvenir shopping. In the evening, we will have a successful dinner in Thamel and we will enjoy the glimpse of Thamel nightlife and the local cuisine. You will have a comfortable and restful night for the last time in Kathmandu.

Your final day in Nepal will begin with breakfast at the hotel. Depending on the flight time, you still might have a few last hours for shopping the souvenirs. Sherpa hospitality and personal achievements from the challenging yet rewarding. This will mark the end of your journey to Nepal, and we hope we have many stories to share.

    1) What is the difficulty level of the Gokyo Ri and Cho La Pass trek?

    This trek is considered a strenuous trekking route. This itinerary combines the high passes and steep climbs along with the longer trekking days. It is suitable for the trekkers with good fitness and prior hiking experience.

    2) Do I need prior trekking experience for this route?

    Yes, it is better to acclimatize and adapt to the high altitude if you have previous experience of the higher trekking routes to have a successful embarkation of this trek.

    3) What permits are required for this trek?

    You will need three permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. The TIMS card is not a mandatory element. Our company will arrange all permits for you.

    4) Can I trek to Gokyo and EBC without a guide?

    Since June 2023, trekking in Nepal’s national parks requires a licensed guide for foreigners. This will ensure our safety and support during times of emergencies and difficult regions like Cho La Pass.

    5) What is the best time to trek Gokyo Ri via Cho La Pass?

    The most favourable and rewarding time for the trek to Gokyo Ri via Cho La Pass is spring and Autumn as they provide stable weather, clear mountain vie, and safer passes.

    6) How cold does it get at Cho La Pass and Gokyo Ri?

    Temperatures can get as low as –10°C to –15°C in the early morning and at night. During late autumn and early spring, the cold and snow can be at its highest. Proper layers of warm clothes are essential.

    7) Is Wi-Fi or charging available on this trek?

    Most teahouses in the lower regions, like Lukla and Namche Bazaar, offer Wi-Fi. To get access to the internet in the higher regions, you may buy an Everest Link Card. Devices can be charged at almost all the stops for a small fee. Network connectivity might not be constant and fast, but it is available.

    8) What kind of food will I get during the trek?

    You will get a mix of Nepali and Tibetan meals like dal bhat, Sherpa stew, noodles, pancakes, omelettes, and soups. The most available options are vegetarian and vegan.

    9) How do I prepare for this trek physically?

    You must prepare with cardio training like jogging, hiking, and stair climbing with a bag or heavy thing in the back for at least 4-6 weeks in advance. These kinds of light training help in building stamina and strengthening the legs. Practice a few uphill hikes if possible.
